SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL FARMER’S: Try visiting nearby farmers’ markets. These are often gathering spots for those selling fresh, local produce. Vegetables at the farmer’s market are hand-picked that morning so you will get them fresh.
You can use online resources like LocalHarvest, Farmstand, or EatWild to find local farms and markets with ease. These websites and apps are designed to connect people like you and me with small-scale farmers. Here is a link where you can locate a farmer or a farmers market near you https://www.usfarmtrail.com. You can enjoy some real food as I call it. I love a good fresh tomato sandwich. I don’t dare buy a tomato from the grocery store. To me, they are nasty tasting.
There are two local farmer’s markets in my home town. They are open from Thursday through Saturday. During the garden season, where I live the garden season is June, July, August, and two weeks in September. If you don’t have money to buy from the farmers you can call to see if you qualify for five dollar vouchers. You may qualify for as many as 50 dollars worth of vouchers. Once you get the vouchers you will use them as if it were real money. Except you don’t get change back. But, the farmers will keep adding to the scale to make your purchase worth five dollars. They have everything fresh from freshly baked bread, pies, cabbage, potatoes, peas, carrots, corn beans, and fresh canned preserves. They even sell crocheted Blankets and much much more. MY PARENTS AND FRESH VEGETABLES
My parents would go to the farmer’s market when they wanted to get fresh vegetables because that is how they were raised and how they raised us. Up until five years ago, my dad would plant a big garden, and my siblings and I would work it for them. Then, my mom would either can or freeze everything, so they would not have to buy much during the off-season. Even this year they purchased enough vegetables to can and freeze until the market opens back up in the spring. My parents are in their eighties mom is eighty-one and my dad is eighty-six.
